    A Day Trip To Estonia

A wonderful lady over at Klorofylli.com, a gardening site with an active forum of Finnish gardening enthusiast, decided to arrange a day trip to Estonia a few weeks ago. I was very happy to join the trip. Our main stop was Nurga Puukool, a really good nursery with an adjoining arboretum that was hosting a small fair for smaller nurseries. We went there by a large bus, took the first morning ferry and started out with the wonderfully picturesque Nomme market. From there on, we continued to Nurga Puukool which is a really good nursery, especially for pine enthusiasts, otherwise it is really good but not exceptional. The adjoining Ellamaa…

    Gardening for Food

Before this becomes a clematis blog, I’ll get back to one of my favorites types of gardening, i.e. kitchen gardening. On one hand, this is my favorite time of the year: you can harvest the best food – the food that you’ve grown yourself. The other day I got inspired by a trip to a restaurant. I therefore decided to put my more than generous crop of tomatoes to good use. I used all the tomatoes in that first picture and some more, all the vegetables, two onions, some Jerusalem artichokes, red wine, a little chili pepper and some deer that my dad had hunted and made a stew. It…

    Lens on Loan

Clematis ’Caerulea Luxurians’ I had an opportunity to test my photographer friend’s 100mm macro lens. It allows a shallow depth of field, it might have been f 1.6, but say at least f 2.8, I don’t really remember. It was really fun, my own 50mm lens that can manage f 1.4, doesn’t allow me to get quite as close to flowers. Sain lainata valokuvaajaystäväni 100mm macro objektiivia jolla saa otettua syvyysterävyydeltään jopa f 1.6, tai f 2.8 aukon kuvia.

    Clematis in the Pale Family

‘The Bride’ There are white Clematis, and then there are sort of white, creamy, light blue and light pink clematis that are a bit indeterminate.  I have to say, that out of this bunch of colors it’s hard to find a Clematis that I wouldn’t like. ‘Albina Plena’ Kärhöjä löytyy valkoisena, melkein valkoisena, kermanvärisinä, vaalean sinisinä ja vaalean punaisina tai hiukan epämääräisissä väreissä. Minun täytyy myöntää, että tästä joukosta on vaikea löytää kärhöä josta en pitäisi. ’Alba Luxurians’ Det finns vita klematisar, nästan vita, gräddfärgade, ljusblåa och ljusröda och lite obestämda till sin färg.  Bland dessa färger är det svårt att hitta en klematis som jag inte skulle tycka om. Clematis…

Knowing your Clematis – The Blues

Knowing which clematis is which gets harder every year. It’s not a case of old age in my case (I hope), but it has more to do with losing some clematis each winter to either cold or voles. I keep some kind of records, but I don’t like labels on plants. This means that especially with clematis with which I employ what my war correspondent friend used to call a “carpet bombing technique” it gets messy. She used the technique for dating, in my case it means planting a lot of similar clematis close to each other, clearly I’m the nerd.. Anyway, I end up with a tangle of blue/purple…
