Le Vasterival
Le Vasterival was the garden that I was most looking forward to seeing on our trip. It is world renown and it is one that I had not been able to visit before, as you can only visit it as part of a group. It was created by Princess Greta Sturdza and her husband Prince Georges Sturdza of Moldavia in the mid-twentieth century and Princess Greta continued to develop it until her death a few years ago.It is a spectacular collector’s garden that still manages to be very beautiful. The plants are planted in naturalistic groupings, mostly in a woodland setting. The combinations are stunning. An exquisite Acer palmatum All sorts…

Fantastic Fall
New York may be experiencing snow storms, but we are having a wonderful fall. It was +15° C at the most today and for once I had a chance to sit at a terrace for a while and just enjoy the weather. It was just amazing! New Yorkissa on jonkinlainen lumimyräkkä, mutta tällä kertaa meillä taas on aivan ihastuttava syksy. Lämpömittari kipusi parhaimmillaan +15° C tänään ja kerrankin minulla oli mahdollisuus istua hetken terassilla ja vain nauttia säästä. Se oli ihanaa! Viherpaja though, had some good ones, and once you are there you just can’t miss their Japanese Garden. The Japanes Garden is entirely indoors. This is gives you a chance to admire some beauties that just aren’t hardy enough for Finland and you get to see them flower before the season really starts outdoors. On Saturday the cherries were just starting to bloom, the Japanese maples were…

What Would the Hardcore Enthusiast Do? Part 1
A seedling I raised, no points for autumn colour. Kasvattamani taimi, syysväri on hiukan laimea. En egen fröplanta, inte mycket till höstfärg. The gardening year starts early if you want to raise plants from seed. In case I had been planning to raise some woody plants I might have sown them in November and placed them somewhere cold for a cold period. A lot of woody plants need this in order to germinate. If I hadn’t done that in November, then just about now (and perhaps a few weeks onward) would be the right time to do it. I collected a lot of seeds from Magnolias and maples and some other…
